The Suicide Epidemic - Glendon releases new films to combat this epidemic

Released on: March 17, 2008, 11:21 am

Press Release Author: The Glendon Association

Industry: Non Profit

Press Release Summary: Heartbreaking reports of suicide occur daily within our
nation. Often times, we wish we would have been better equipped to recognize any
warning signs or cries for help. These signs may be subtle and often easily
overlooked by friends, family, and even professionals in this field; however, with
information provided in our new films, anyone can gain life saving information to
help prevent suicide. Suicide is an epidemic in the world and won’t end until we
take an active role to stop it.

Press Release Body: • Worldwide there are more deaths by suicide than by homicide
and war combined
• An estimated 5 million living Americans have attempted suicide
• On average, one suicide occurs every 17 minutes;
• Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for young people ages 15-24;

The Glendon Association has produced two new films addressing suicide prevention
specifically made for the general public as well as for mental health professionals.
With personal accounts from 3 survivors who made lethal attempts to take their own
lives as well as discussion from world renowned experts, these films will open your
eyes to the world and thoughts of those contemplating suicide and provide you with
active steps you can take to help prevent suicide.

“My real purpose for wanting to make this film about suicide for the public is to
educate all people about what to look for in their friends, their family members,
their loved ones, their coworkers, their fellow students that could alert them to
the fact that this person is in trouble, that they need help.”
- Dr. Lisa Firestone, Director of Research & Education at The Glendon Association

In an ongoing national outreach effort to educate the public about suicide, The
Glendon Association and Lisa Firestone, PhD, a clinical psychologist and suicide
specialist, are available to discuss this mental health epidemic. Dr. Firestone can
provide information on: ways to identify an individual’s risk for suicide; effective
treatment options; and how the issue of suicide affects specific populations such as
youth.
