Alternative history novel entitled RELUCTANT GODS by Paul Hutchens is published

Released on: August 12, 2008, 3:20 am

Press Release Author: Paul Hutchens

Industry: Entertainment

Press Release Summary: The story begins in the 22nd Century when a parallel universe
is discovered. This universe is an exact duplicate of our own, except that its
version of Earth is in pre-Christian times.

Press Release Body: The main character, Mark, is a shy, gentle, slightly bumbling
student who becomes stranded on the other Earth in 73 BC with a few 22nd Century
gadgets to aid his survival. Although Mark has a gentle nature, he is faced with
some extreme ethical dilemmas when Spartacus\' slave revolt against the Romans breaks
out. He meets a runaway slave named Rani and they become lovers. Influenced by
Rani, Mark uses his gadgets to make ever more dramatic and deadly interventions in
the slave revolt.

About the Author:

Paul Hutchens lives in Norfolk, England. After a number of years in a variety of
jobs, including tree surgeon and publican, Paul is currently taking time out to
pursue his long-standing ambition to become a full-time novelist. Although Reluctant
Gods is a complete story in its own right, it is also the first of a planned series
of novels that blend science fiction with historical fiction. Stemming from the what
if? traditions of ‘alternative history’ these books create an entire new world where
past and future collide.

Excerpt from the book:

\"All the screens were showing images, graphs or information of some kind. The big
central screen was split into two images. The left-hand half of the screen showed a
portion of an enormous space station, called Achilles, in geostationary orbit three
hundred and fifty thousand kilometres above their heads. The right-hand half showed
a real-time representation of a small device, named Molly, that was aboard Achilles
but could not be filmed in its perfectly sealed chamber. Mark had taken his seat
about three hours before Achilles was due to launch Molly into the antimatter
universe.\"
