Press Release Author: Ann Smith

Press Release Summary: Society of News Design analyzes coverage of California's
legalization of same-sex marriage - XPLANE infographic

Press Release Body: Portland, OR, October 30, 2008 -- XPLANE, a global information
design consultancy, partnered with the Society of News Design's Design Journal to
visually depict the lifecycle of media coverage surrounding California's 2008 law
legalizing same-sex marriage. The 20-page spread includes a pullout centerfold by
XPLANE that graphically breaks down the timeline of the news coverage. The
introductory article can be viewed on http://www.snd.org.

Design Journal's coverage includes essays by journalistic experts across media
mediums: Roger Black, an expert in the design of content-based media; Dan Zedak of
The Boston Globe; Ryan Sholin, a Knight News Challenge grant winner and Internet
reporting expert; Don Wallace, television news producer; Michael Puente, reporter
with Chicago Public Radio, WBEZ 91.5 FM; and Svenake Bostrom, media development
manager at Sundsvalls Tiding in Sweden.

XPLANE's information design team was responsible for reviewing the individual essays
and extracting key dates, news nuggets and milestones over the course of the news
cycle period. These were visually depicted on a timeline-style centerfold. XPLANE's
team also did the individual illustration throughout the 20-page feature.

With an innovative visual, multidisciplinary methodology, XPLANE is unique because
it applies both left and right-brained approaches to develop fresh solutions to
challenging communication problems. This approach accelerates understanding, which
drives actions and results. Companies have hired XPLANE to motivate employees, drive
sales, convince decision makers and improve processes. XPLANE won a bronze medal in
2008 at the 16th Malofiej International Infographics Awards, known as the most
important and respected infographic contest in the world.

XPLANE has also created XPLANATIONS on the topics of the current subprime mortgage
lending crisis and Barack Obama declining public funding. These can be viewed at
http://www.xplane.com/subprime and http://www.xplane.com/obama.
